19th-Mar-2007 03:25 pm - My Mary loves to trek
I know you're all out there, hanging out for baby news, so here it is, straight from her mother's mouth:

Mary is getting big, almost 11 lb and she smiles now!  She likes to "talk" too.  She has very definite opinions on things too.  She really seems to like music and gets upset if Star Trek is on and she can't see the TV.  I don't think she actually watches but I guess she recognizes the voices and wants to watch.

What do you think that means?  Should I worry?

Returning from Switzerland and cable TV -- 50 channels, but only 2 I'm awake enough to understand -- to Sydney and 5 channels.

Imagine the delight as we cruise them.  ABC has an ENGLISH program.  And channel 7!  And 9!!  And 10!!!!!  And SBS is subtitled!!!  We were so very excited. Four English programs!!!!!!!

Ok, you don't need to say it.  On my way out now to get milk, bread, and a life.

2nd-Feb-2007 06:04 pm - eat food
While I wait for my brain to re-engage properly with Oz, I post this long but worthwhile essay on "nutrition" from the IHT by Michael Pollan.  If you're pressed for time, here's the fast food version:

"Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants."

But read the essay if you're interested in the recent history of eating in the West and the "science" of nutrition.

& maybe it's just a lingering jetlag effekt, but Sydney feels a bit meaner, a bit more grasping, and at the same time, a bit more cringing-under-the-weight-of-shite-Howard-has-dropped-here-on-my-shoulders-and-snarling...or is it just me?

1st-Feb-2007 01:06 pm - am I me yet?

I'm back in Sydney.  Have been since sometime in the first week of January.  We flew from Geneva to London, had a lovely time with z and g, and either gave them or received from them, the flu.  A real flu.  Not like the wimpy one I had last month, but the flu to end all flus.  Days of fever at 104, nausea, headache, copious post- and pre-nasal drip, bronchitis.  Charming during 14-hour flights, I assure you.  By the time we'd recovered, I'd gone into some form of identity shock.  Me?  Is this me?  Is this where I am?

I usually have a couple of days after arriving in a new place or returning "home" where i can't quite work out what and why I'm doing there, but this has taken weeks.  But at last, I think I can type "I" without the scare quotes.  Okay, enough about me, whoever I am.  Oh, and I've been internet less for much of the time, so haven't been reading the flist.  Lemme know if I missed something mega-kewl.

12th-Dec-2006 12:29 pm - internet access in Sydney

Actually folks, maybe you can help.  When we get back, we won't have fixed line phone, and will be starting at ground zero for internet access.  We'll also probably want to avoid longterm contracts.  I'm not sure whether wireless is an option in Sydney yet, and a couple of years ago, cable still wasn't running past Balmoral, but that could have changed.  Maybe satellite????  Anyone got any pointers, tips, pet hates to share?
Much obliged in advance.

12th-Dec-2006 12:22 pm - Tie a yellow ribbon....
Well, I've been killer sick with flu, and then, things have been in limbo here. Constantly changing limbo. They still are, but are approaching resolution. I'll be back in Sydney soon, but don't know exactly when.... Probably the 2nd of January, if side trips to exotic locals don't pan out (and here, at the eleventh hour, that's looking unlikely).

Okay, so I'm bad blog girl. Best I can do is to send you off to amuse yourselves at France24, the French answer to CNN. In English and French. Regalez-vous: http://www.france24.com

24th-Nov-2006 12:02 pm - Nightwatch
We're touring the capitols of Europe, in a frenzy.  Will we ever be here again?

Paris for K's birthday.  Amsterdam last weekend.  Madrid not this but the next.  (Never been to Madrid, so send tips flying this way!)

Caught up with an old friend, who put us up in his fab little flat.  Talked Iain Banks.  Played with his drum set and all his bleeding edge digital toys.

Ate Vlaamse frites mit Mayonnaise.  Hit the Van Gogh museum and the abbreviated Rijksmuseum.  Marvelled and mused.

and flying into Schipol at night, Amsterdam was laid out in sodium vapeur craquelure.  Magic.

24th-Nov-2006 11:53 am - Walking the left bank
Well, I'm too sick to do any fresh writing....
A friend (hi Matt!) is heading to Paris, and as is my wont, I loaded him down with tips and information on what to do there. Here, should you ever find yourself in the Latin Quarter, is my walk (under the cut). It doesn't give much in the way of "Must See This", just where to go. If you can't find something to look at by yourself in Paris, you're an idiot.

23rd-Nov-2006 10:12 am - Codeine gumdrops
Currently, these are my constant companions. Once again, a simple sniffle has become bronchitis. But these little beauties make my life complete. Ok, no, but they do allow me to sleep at night for a couple hours at a stretch.

They're called Euphon N. Can you get them in Oz? I've never seen 'em. If not, I'll have to bring back a truckload.
